Sharp objects such as scissors have been banned from traveling in your carry-on bags for several years now. However, in a recent announcement the TSA decided to reverse its ban an small, sharp objects.
Part of the reasoning behind lifting the ban is the sheer cost in labor for rummaging through carry-on luggage just to confiscate a pair of scissors. The costs for ridding you of scissors that you may have packed is estimated to run millions of dollars across the United States.
The changes to the TSA's luggage policies include this excerpt from their website "Beginning December 22, scissors with a cutting edge of four inches or less and tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers smaller than seven inches will be permitted on board. Scissors longer than four inches and tools such as crowbars, drills, hammers, and saws will continue to be prohibited from carry-on bags. Lighters will continue to be banned from the cabin of aircraft and in checked baggage."
