Fingerprints and Flying
Monday March 3, 2008
There is something about the idea of using fingerprints as identification at an airport that makes me uneasy. I mean I've had to, but that is for working at an airport. This is about fingerprints and the flying public - or at least in Sweden.
SAS gives its customers the option of using their fingerprints as identification for domestic flights for passengers checking in luggage. A biometric scan is taken of the finger at check-in and then again at the gate - a match means you are good to go. It's purpose is to speed up the process of getting through the airport, but certainly it's not that giant a leap to think that this kind of technology could lead to getting information on every passenger that travels.
In any case, it's an interesting story. BusinessWeek reports on the business of fingerprints and flying.
