Speculation Over Spanair Crash

Saturday August 23, 2008
Spanair had one of the deadliest crashes in recent European history this week. On August 20, a Las Palmas (Canary Islands) destined flight crashed and burned almost immediately after takeoff from Madrid. As days go by, the air tragedy has moved into the realm of speculation.

It appears that the flight had earlier been returned to the gate with a mechanical problem. But, obviously, it was decided that the plane was air-worthy. Over 150 people died, crew and most of the passengers on board. Nearly two dozen passengers did survive the fiery crash.

Passengers who missed the flight by minutes quickly moved from frustration to relief at having avoided a crash with so many fatalities. There is speculation that a passenger wanted to deplane upon the initial return of the flight to the gate was not permitted to do so.

The speculation is sure to continue until the complete story of why the crash occurred and what happened is resolved.

Spanair has issued several press releases with updates and pertinent phone numbers, including a full passenger list. Links to some of the articles and press releases are available in the Air Travel Forum. Also, Patrick Smith weighs in on the crash from a pilot's perspective.
