Can't Afford to Fly - Read Travel Books

Tuesday October 21, 2008
In addition to airfare specials of the week, I am on the hunt for other travel-related items that may be on sale. In a bit of a battered global economy, travel may be limited to the armchair. But there are always travel guide books, and tales of air travels that may whisk you away to far off places within the content of their pages. So here are a few of the travel-related books on sale right now.

Lonely Planet is probably the quintessential budget travel guide. Their guidebooks delve into history and cheap eats and accommodations. But they aren't just limited to travel guides. A great resource for the budget traveler, they are currently having a promotion where you buy 2 books and get the 3rd one free (until November 5), along with free shipping if you spend more than $40. What I like about the promotion is free shipping applies (at different price thresholds) for several countries, and not just the US. Global travel and a global deal!

I'll admit it, I have lots of maps and several atlases. Maps.com has these in seemingly endless supply. They do sell other things such as globes and games, but for a map of pretty much anything, it's a great place to look. They have a promotion that continues until October 31.
5% OFF all orders! Use promotion code OCT5OFF upon checkout to receive your discount.

Patrick Smith's, Ask the Pilot is kind of like a new air travel classic, he writes about everything in the air from turbulence to inflight service - from a pilot's perspective. I read it when it first came out, and the information he has gathered and written in book form does not age or seem outdated as often happens with books about air travel. Pricegrabber has found copies for as little as $2 plus shipping.
