Language and Lingo of Travel

From Arlene Fleming, About.com GuideSeptember 12, 2009

germanI always try and learn a few words in the local language of countries I travel to. I have linked to a few of the languages you can find on About.com. But there is also a language to air travel, so to speak, and if you wrote down that you were looking for a FIRAV since your flight that was HK is now XCL or XL, I would know that you wanted me to find the first available flight now that your confirmed flight is cancelled.

Although air travel lingo may not be useful in a foreign land, you never know, it may come in handy if you start hearing airline workers using industry terms. I have a fairly extensive dictionary of air travel terms (feel free to share other air travel lingo if you find that it's not on the list).

Foreign language words and phrases that could be useful for your travels from the Guides at About - French Pronunciation and Audio files (French Language); Italian Language Audio Lab (Italian Language); Spanish for Travel (Spanish Language); German Travel (German Language); Greek Language resources (Greece for Visitors)
