From Arlene Fleming, About.com Guide   March 6, 2010

seatsHaving worked for an airline for over 15 years, friends often ask about how to get free upgrades. Are there any particular strategies that can secure a bigger seat for you flight? The short answer is if you are entitled to it yes, and if you aren't then you kind of need luck on your side. But luck can turn into opportunity for a few of the top 10 ways to get upgraded from economy class to coach.

If you are a top tier frequent flyer then you know you have a good shot at upgrades, but the infrequent traveler may need to dress the part, volunteer to be bumped, etc. to have a chance to sit up front.

Hi Arlene!
Thanks for these tips. Since being an elite member of the frequent flyer programmes makes a great difference in the treatment you receive for upgrades, I was wondering if you could do a post on “Frequent flyer credit cards”. I was recently offered an American Express gold card that if I use normally I get points and miles for it, therefore increasing miles. I am however lost at whether I should take it or not, what’s the catch? I normally don’t use credit cards for the credit, so I was going to pay all my expenditure each month, so I don’t think interest rates (which I’ve been told are really high) would apply. The card is also free for the first year – can I cancel afterwards if I don’t like it?
So… I’m all confused and thought it may make an interesting topic for another post! What’s the catch of frequent flyer credit cards? Would you recommend them?

Thanks and thanks for such a cool blog!
