How to Ensure You Receive the Special Meal That You Requested
From your Air Travel Guide

So you are a vegetarian, lactose intolerant, or just don't like the usual airline fare. On a large number of airlines you can silence the hunger pangs by requesting a special meal. Here's how to make sure you get the meal you asked for!

Here's How:
  1. Try and make your request for a special meal well in advance. Airline policies vary, so request as soon as you decide that a special meal best serves your inflight dining needs!
  2. Call each airline that you will be using directly to ensure that they have your request on file. Because airlines and travel agents don't all use the same reservations systems, special meal requests are easily lost.
  3. Don't change your flights if possible. Airlines cannot simply transfer your meal to another flight if you decide to change flights at the last minute. Many airlines can accommodate changes even up to 18 hours before, but don't chance it.
  4. You certainly may ask for a special meal at Check In, but it is fairly unlikely that you will get one requesting it an hour or two prior to departure. If someone who asked for a special meal doesn't show up, then there may be a chance.
  5. If you have forgotten to request a special meal and are just beginning your travels, you may not have them for your flights out, but you could certainly request them for your return. Ask the airline agent to place your request on your file.
  6. Mention your name, seat #,and special meal request to a flight attendant on board. This is essential if you have changed your seat. Don't lose your special meal because the flight attendants can't find you, so speak up.
