New Kid on the Star Alliance Block?

US Airways moves closer to membership

By Arlene Fleming, About.com

US Airways, once caught up in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, is emerging stronger and forging alliances. They have recently entered into a codeshare agreement with Lufthansa (one of the original members of the Star Alliance), and membership in the Star Alliance seems imminent.

US Airways has committed to a codeshare agreement with Lufthansa. This growing partnership in turn is likely to lead to US Airways becoming a member of the Star Alliance.

US Airways has already developed a sort of marketing partnership with United Airlines (another founding airline of the Star Alliance) in response to the faltering airline industry. Since the formation of Star Alliance, United had been the only member airline based in the United States.

The codeshare agreement with Lufthansa was signed on Thursday, May 15th and affects U.S.-Germany flights between the two airlines.

For the flying public, a move towards Star Alliance on the part of US Airways will mean more options for accumulating/redeeming frequent flyer miles. As well, passengers loyal to US Airways will have more destinations opened to them considering the more than dozen partner airlines of Star Alliance. If joining Star Alliance occurs, business travelers will have access to even more airport lounges.
