When Terrorism Took to the Air - the Airline Industry after September 11th

The Day that Air Travel Changed

By Arlene Fleming, About.com

September 11th was the darkest day for air travel world wide. Passengers abandoned the airports in the weeks following the tragedy. The attacks in New York City and Washington D.C. extended beyond U.S. borders with grave ramifications for many airlines.

Soon after September 11th, 2001 a number of airlines collapsed. Most shocking of all was the fact that a number of the now-defunct airlines had been in existence for decades, and were not necessarily airlines based in the United States.

So where are the airlines now? And what are the airlines doing to mark the anniversary of September 11th?

The flights that were lost to terrorism on September 11th, 2001:
  • American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles - lives lost - 81 passengers, 9 flight attendants, 2 pilots
  • United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston to Los Angeles - lives lost - 56 passengers, 7 flight attendants, 2 pilots
  • American Airlines Flight 77 from Washington Dulles to Los Angeles - lives lost - 58 passengers, 4 flight attendants, 2 pilots
  • United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco - lives lost - 37 passengers, 5 flight attendants, 2 pilots
