When Terrorism Took to the Air - the Airline Industry after September 11th
The airlines react one year later

By , About.com Guide

What did the airlines do to mark the anniversary of September 11th
Airlines are reacting in very different ways to the anniversary of September 11th. Some airlines offered massive discounts to lure passengers to fly over the week of September 11th. Other airlines scaled back service.

Spirit Airlines offered free travel on September 11th, however the seats were snapped up quickly. National Airlines joined the discounting game by offering one dollar flights on September 11th (also sold out). Even carriers outside of the United States gotinto the act - with Air New Zealand offering $499 fares out of Los Angeles (sold out). The incentives apparently worked.

Other airlines dealt with September 11th by reducing flights. Delta Airlines reduced service for the entire week of September 9th to the 13th. Both American Airlines and United Airlines also scaled back flights for September 11th. Continental Airlines also considered reducing its service on September 11th.

In Europe, British Airways canceled a third of its transatlantic flights due to poor sales for September 11th. Air France and Scandinavian Airlines also announced flight reductions over September 11th.

One year after the events of September 11th, the skies were just a little bit quieter than usual.
