What are the policies of airlines in war times?

  • Air Canada's 'Peace of Mind' policy would allow passengers traveling to the U.S. or to other international destinations to rebook discounted tickets without penalty until December 31st, 2003. Travel restrictions on discounted tickets would still apply for travel within Canada.
  • Alitalia is addressing any current concerns that passengers may have by permitting those who purchase transatlantic tickets up to March 31st, 2003 to rebook once without change penalties for travel through December 31, 2003. This rebooking must be made by May 31, 2003 or the travel date (whichever date is earlier). Alitalia also requires the new reservation to be made in the same booking code as originally ticketed.

In the case of a Red Alert or military action passengers may rebook any travel that falls within 60 days of military action or a Level Red Alert. This must be done within 30 days of either event, and permits travel up to December 31, 2003. The new reservation must be made in the same booking code as originally ticketed. (Please note that these policies are applicable to tickets issued in the United States only).

For all of the airlines that have recently established policies relaxing change fees and other restrictions on discounted tickets in the event of war and/or a Level Red Alert, some rules remain. Discounted tickets are still non refundable and the name on the ticket cannot be changed. For the airlines that are permitting passengers to use their tickets as credit towards future travel for another destination, this is allowed with the understanding that the passenger will pay the price difference between the two airfares and adhere to the rules of their new ticket.

As other airlines introduce policies to deal with an unstable global environment, they are likely to follow the policy models set up by the airlines mentioned in this feature.
