Greener Air Travel - Thai Airways

By Arlene Fleming, About.com

Airlines are slowly moving towards more green, and less environmentally-harmful practices. Thai Airways is an Asian airline that is gaining notice as a greener airline.

Thai Airways received recognition by the Bureau Veritas Certification for its environmental awareness standards in December 2007.

"We are committed to crafting new environmentally-conscious initiatives, " said Agkarajit Panomwon Na Ayutthaya, a General Manager for Thai Airways in the US. "Especially in today's world, with looming issues like global warming, we at Thai Airways feel that we must take extra measures to devote our efforts toward reducing carbon footprints and improving the earth."

To this end, Thai Airways was honored during the World Environmental Day Exhibition. Some of the reasons which led to this recognition included:
  • Biodiesel Project - catering recycles leftover vegetable oil from meals to create energy resources, reduce the purchase of diesel fuel and the emission of CO2.
  • Organic Fertilizer Project - a recycling program for leftover food from the employee lunchroom at THAI's Operations Center - using old, unused vegetables and fruit peel to make organic fertilizer.
  • Ground Support Equipment Repair for Environmental Friendliness Project - employees worked to decrease environmental impact created from the repair of ground support equipment, and to decrease the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere.
  • Wheel Suspension Project for Aviation Equipment - Aircraft Services reuses recycled papers, aluminum and plastics, as opposed to wood, in its wheel suspension equipment - reduces the number of trees that are cut down to make suspension equipment.
  • Waste Water Treatment Project - both chemical waste water derived from aircraft maintenance and community waste water collected from various THAI buildings are neutralized and disposed of.
