The year it was founded in Texas, Continental Airlines was known as Varney Speed Lines in 1934. The name change to Continental occurred just a few years later in 1937.

Major Crashes / Incidents:
Continental's deadliest crash was in May 1962. A bomb detonated in a lavatory en route from Chicago to Kansas City, leading to the plane crashing in a field. All 45 people on board died.

The debris from a Continental flight on a runway in Paris in 2000 is partly blamed for the crash of an Air France Concorde which killed everyone on board the Air France flight.
