Mid-Air Collision Over the Hudson River - 9 Die in Mid-Air Collision

Summary - August 8, 2009 at approximately 12 noon, local time, a small aircraft clipped a helicopter from behind in a mid-air collision over the Hudson River. 9 people are presumed dead including 5 Italian tourists and pilot on a sightseeing tour in the helicopter, and 3 on board the plane. Weather conditions were reported to be clear.

August 8, 2009 at approximately 12 noon, local time.

Which airline was involved?
The helicopter was used for sightseeing and operated by Liberty Helicopter. The plane was a Piper Saratoga.

What happened?
It seems the Piper clipped the back of the helicopter over the Hudson River. Both helicopter and plane then plunged into the river.

What was the cause / Who is to blame?
Although no flight recorders are expected to be found as they are not required on smaller aircraft, it's expected that communications with Air Traffic Control and eye witness reports should help determine the cause and who is responsible.
