American Airlines AAdvantage and the Frequent Flyer Program Turns 25

By Arlene Fleming, About.com

American Airlines AAdvantage, the grand-daddy of frequent flyer programs, is turning 25. To celebrate such a momentous event, American Airlines is rolling out several events to reward its loyal passengers. The first frequent flyer revolutionized air travel by creating loyalty towards an airline - rewarding passengers for flying with them - and has grown into a worldwide phenomenon that has spawned dozens of frequent flyer programs with different airlines.

May 1st marks the 25th anniversary of American Airlines' AAdvantage program. AAdvantage has the distinction of being the world’s first and largest frequent flyer program. American recently surprised thousands of Mavericks fans with free airline tickets, thus celebrating its frequent flyer program's 25th anniversary should prove to be at least as fun and rewarding.

American Airlines starts the anniversary party with some rewarding flights - selecting 10 Celebration Flights throughout the United States and surprising the passengers on these special flights with a 25,000-mile AAdvantage voucher (essentially one domestic award ticket).

Over 1,000 passengers, on nine American Airlines flights and one American Eagle flight, are expected to receive the surprise 25,000 AAdvantage miles each – enough for an Economy Class round-trip, award ticket within the continental U.S., Alaska and Canada.

“For 25 years, the AAdvantage program has been one of the cornerstones of our relationship with customers,” said Dan Garton, American’s Executive Vice President of Marketing. “We’re very appreciative of our customers’ business, and this is a great way to show it.”

“We are proud to sponsor these Celebration Flights to thank the members of the AAdvantage Travel Award program, and to honor how innovative American Airlines has been in rewarding their loyal customers for the past 25 years," said Heather Carroll, Director of Travel & Entertainment Industries Acceptance at MasterCard International.

In addition to the celebration flights, American Airlines a lso launched “25 Deals In 25 Days” Promotion during the month of May, where AAdvantage members can get great deals and discounts.
