Air Travel and the Environment - Climate Crisis, Climate Change and Carbon Taxes
The impact of air travel and the environment is increasingly being noted by air travelers and also by airlines. In an effort to reduce the damage caused by air travel, a few airlines are looking at carbon offsets of their own, to neutralize the effects of their flights on the environment. As travelers, there are hundreds of projects that you can buy carbon offsets to neutralize your footprint on the global climate.

Invisible Armor - Hand Sanitzer - Inflight Health
Invisible Armor is a hand sanitizer that can be toted on flights.

Waiting for Wilma
With an intense hurricane season that will not officially end until the end of November, airlines have had to place their contingency plans in gear repeatedly this year. Wilma finishes off the alphabet of names, and any subsequent names will use the Greek alphabet. And with Wilma, passengers and airlines will scramble again to get out of her way.

London Bombings and Air Travel Policies - July 7, 2005
I've just arrived back from work at the airport, having encountered many passengers who found it very difficult to get to flights on time after the bombings in London. Given the difficulties, airlines are adjusting their changes/cancellation policies to accommodate passengers traveling to/from London.

Escaping the devastating tsunami and air travel policies
The latest tsunami in Asia has led to 10s of thousands of deaths and during a time of year when many tourists make their way to Asia, many are just trying to survive the deadly effects of this force of nature. Here are some of the initiatives airlines are taking for passengers caught in the affected areas, and those who were planning to travel there.

Carbon Neutral Flights
Air travel has long been lambasted, particularly by environmental groups, for the amount of gas emissions that flights release into the atmosphere, and contributing to global warming. There is a growing movement to make a smaller environmental imprint, by becoming carbon neutral - effectively paying for the pollution we cause by contributing to projects that do not contribute noxious gas and toxins into the environment. The air travel industry has begun to join this trend.

Santa Fe Air - First Jet Services Company in the US to Offset Carbon Emissions
It wasn't that long ago but on March 10, 2007, Santa Fe Air, a private jet services company based in New Mexico, joined forces with Forest Guardians, a non-profit, environmental organization to establish a carbon offset program by planting enough trees to offset the jet’s carbon emissions.

Air Travel Tips for People with Disabilities
Mobility International USA sent along a really well-researched, straightforward feature on air travel tips for people with disabilities. What I like about it is not only does it have lots of practical tips such as advising the airline in advance of any mobility devices that may be brought along - but it also includes a certain degree of non-specific advice such as being prepared and flexible for difficult situations that may arise.

Accessible Air Travel: A Guide for People with Disabilities
"The air travel environment can be overwhelming for most people ... even more stressful for travelers with disabilities. Knowing ahead of time about procedures for boarding the aircraft, stowage of assistive devices including a wheelchair, assistance from the cabin crew, etc., is the key to having a smooth trip", states Terry Moakley of the United Spinal Association.

Bringing Car Seats on a Flight for Infants and Toddlers Under Two
It isn't a requirement yet, but more and more government civil aviation authorities are pushing for some form of mandatory use of approved car seats for infants and toddlers under 2. There are certainly safety issues if you bring your child under 2 on board as a "lap baby". Concerns over turbulence and other safety issues with flights have led numerous pediatric associations to encourage the use of a CRS for children under 2.

EU Blacklist of Airlines
The European Union has a blacklist of airlines that are not permitted to fly into the countries of the European Union due to safety concerns. Before you fly, it may be a good idea to see what airlines are simply not considered European airport-worthy. The list does change from time to time as some airlines improve their safety records while others worsen.

Air Travel and Tuberculosis, Tropical and Contagious Diseases on Airlines
I traveled to Asia during the scare with SARS. I have been on airplanes where every cough and sneeze was stared down by other passengers with fear of possibly contracting something. The latest case is a virulent, and possibly drug-resistant form of tuberculosis. This time though it is a young lawyer from Atlanta that traveled to Europe and back with a potentially fatal form of TB carried in his lungs.

Remembering 9/11 - My Memories of September 11, 2001
September 11, 2001 started like any ordinary day for millions of people, but it is the day that changed air travel. At the time, I was working at one of the busiest airports in the world and things were quieting down after the Labor Day weekend rush.
