Chinese New Year Airfares

By Arlene Fleming, About.com

Some ticket ideas to get you to popular Chinese New Year destinations - this year it's the year of the Ox. The official date for Chinese New Year this year is January 26, 2009, but events and festivities may occur before or after that day.

About.com's China Travel Guide has outlined an amazing array of major festivals celebrating Chinese New Year - across the globe.

American Airlines Vacations is offering several specials for hotels around the world during the Chinese New Year period.

San Francisco has the largest Chinatown outside of Asia, so it is one of the premier destinations to celebrate Chinese New Year. It's a gateway city for Asia, so it has lots of flights to that part of the world, but having one of the busiest airports in the world, means that airfare specials are relatively easy to come by. The festival and parade is sponsored by Southwest Airlines.

New York has several events - Lunar New Year Parade and Festival, Firecracker ceremony, and a Lunar Flower Market to name a few. Airfares to New York are not difficult to find in January, and you may find a few specials in the Air Travel Forum.

Toronto and Vancouver have the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations in Canada. Air Canada flies from dozens of US cities, and often has specials, particularly to Toronto and Vancouver. The Canadian dollar is weaker, and you can check in two pieces of luggage for free.

Hong Kong
Really one of the best places to celebrate Chinese New Year, there is a well priced package including hotel stay starting at $769 per person (San Francisco departure). The package includes - roundtrip airfare, 5 nights hotel accommodation, and roundtrip airport hotel transfer. Travel is on Cathay Pacific.
